Nine Exercises to Help You Draft a New Story

These exercises are designed so that, if you do them in order, you'll come out with a rough draft of a new story. You don't have to have any particular ideas or inspiration before you start. All of these can be done in under half an hour.

If you like, you can take characters and situations you already have in mind and use the exercises to help figure out what, exactly, you want to do with them. Or if you've gotten stuck somewhere in a story you're writing, or lost your way, these can give you a fresh perspective.

Exercise #1: The Hand Fate Deals You

Exercise #2: A Problem

Exercise #3: An Ending, and a Letter

Exercise #4: A Plot

Exercise #5: A Lump in the Throat

Exercise #6: A Draft: Act I

Exercise #7: A Draft: Act II

Exercise #8: A Draft: Act III

Exercise #9: Snapshots from Your Subconscious
