Holiday Reading

What I'm enjoying this holiday season:

Nutcracker and Mouse-King, by E.T.A. Hoffmann. This super-creepy and weird Christmas story from 1816 was the inspiration for the famous holiday ballet. A nice foil for all the sugary holiday songs and images we have to wade through at this season.

(E.T.A. Hoffman is the author whom Freud called "the unrivaled master of the uncanny in literature," in Freud's famous and creepy 1919 essay "The Uncanny.")
